On the occasion of World Refugee Day, we have the great pleasure to invite you to the first-ever “Refugee Week Greece”. The week-long celebration will kick off with a launch event on Tuesday, 21 June 2022, at 18:00, at Serafio City of Athens.
Refugee Week Greece is a community-led cultural festival celebrating the contribution, creativity and resilience of people who have been forced to flee. Globally, the number of people forcibly displaced has surpassed 100 million for the first time.
The initiative, brought to Greece by Athens Comics Library in collaboration with Counterpoints Arts, is part of a growing global movement advocating for inclusive and resilient communities, where refugees and asylum seekers are able to live in safety and can continue to make valuable contributions to the societies hosting them.
This year’s theme is “healing”, and celebrates the capacity and strength required by refugees and asylum seekers to begin a new life. From 20 to 26 June, local authorities, non-governmental organizations, grassroots groups and communities all over Greece will host open and inclusive events, inviting everyone to contribute to changing the narrative around refugees and migrant communities, to share stories and to heal together in the face of shared challenges.
The launch event on 21 June in Athens will include a comic exhibition, a virtual reality projection corner, several film screenings, artistic activities and a discussion around the concept and the meaning of healing.
The event will also feature an exclusive digital interview with Neil Gaiman, acclaimed writer and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, at the invitation of the City of Athens. The event will conclude with a selection of snacks from several countries and a concert, featuring Merak.
Refugee Week Greece is supported by the City of Athens, the Special Secretary for the Protection of Unaccompanied Minors of the Ministry of Migration and Asylum and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency.
