During a series of workshops in Athens and Thessalonoiki, organised by Symbiosis, with the support of UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, in Greece, participants – refugees and locals – had the opportunity to learn the essentials of storytelling and journalism, and how to craft and deliver memorable stories that communicate a message and make an impact.
The workshops were delivered in January and February 2022 by media professionals, through online and physical meetings, and included both mentoring and practice that helped participants to enhance their skills and explore tools about mobile phone journalism, video-making and social media.
“At first, we didn’t know what ‘news’ was. But soon, we discovered what made a story ‘news’ and we dived into storytelling and journalist. We read the story of “Little Red Riding Hood’, yet also current news such as the Covid-19 pandemic, and worked them into news; in doing so, we found out that WHY, WHO, WHAT, WHERE, HOW play a huge role into making a news story and that upside down pyramids are a big thing!”, one participant said.
Throughout the workshops, participants produced short videos, stories, podcasts, photostories – a learning process in responsible reporting. The results of their work can be seen here: https://medialab.blog/stories/
