Lesvos, 28 January 2022 – UNHCR continues supporting the Greek authorities on Lesvos in responding to the needs of the host community, refugees and asylum seekers. In recognition of the invaluable role of the General Hospital of Mytilene in providing life-saving assistance and in light of the needs of the community, the UNHCR Lesvos Sub-Office donated a cardiotocograph machine, along with supporting materials, to be used at the Hospital’s Maternity clinic.
“UNHCR acknowledges the difficult work of the General Hospital, particularly amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, and the critical role it plays in protecting the lives of both locals and refugees” said Reyhaneh Shakibaie, the Head of Office of UNHCR on Lesvos.
“As UNHCR, we aim to support the Hospital, as often and as much as we can, either by donating equipment such as this cardiotocograph, as well as other material we have previously donated including prefabricated containers, an ultrasound machine and printer, or by providing services such as interpretation” she continued, adding “I want to wholeheartedly thank the Hospital Director for his continued collaboration, communication and humanitarian approach and all the doctors and staff of the Hospital for their work and dedication throughout these challenging times”.
On his part, the Hospital Director, Mr. Georgios Kambouris, stressed that since the beginning of his tenure he has always strived to ensure that Mytilene’s Hospital offers the same level of services to all those in need, irrespective of nationality, gender, colour or religion, without exhibiting any discrimination. “Our Hospital has carried and continues carrying a heavy burden. For this reason we welcome any assistance so that we can keep responding to the high level of needs. I want to thank UNHCR for the donation of the cardiotocograph and to express my desire for and belief in the continuation of our excellent collaboration” he said.
