UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is participating this year at the 16th International Book Fair in Thessaloniki (TBF), with a series of activities and discussions to bring forward refugee voices and stories, their artistic expression and contribution to our common cultural heritage. These include a roundtable on the link between literary creation and the refugee experience, as well as interactive and theatre workshops for children and adults inspired by publications on refugees and human rights, in cooperation with the Hellenic Theatre/Drama and Education Network (TENet-Gr). UNHCR will also be present at Kiosk 13, Stand 84, to inform and discuss with the public on refugee-related issues.
These activities are part of TBF’s feature “Imagine all the People”, which is dedicated to refugees, and will take place from 9 to 12 May 2019, at the International Exhibition and Congress Centre of Thessaloniki (TIF-Helexpo).

In a roundtable titled “Refugee experience as a source of inspiration and literary creation,” UNHCR Representative in Greece Philippe Leclerc, Iraqi novelist Ali Bader, and Swedish writer Aris Fioretos will explore how being uprooted from one’s homeland can trigger creativity: can writing function as a strategy of survival and does literary creation have an origin? The discussion, which will be held in English and Greek, will be moderated by Dora Avgeri, journalist.
