Sudan Emergency

Following the outbreak of armed conflict in Sudan on 15 April 2023, large numbers of civilians have been forced to flee, including people who were already internally displaced because of previous conflicts in Sudan and refugees from other countries who had sought safety in Sudan.

In addition to new internal displacement, over 1.2 million people, including Sudanese refugees and refugees of other nationalities hosted by Sudan have fled Sudan to neighbouring countries or returned home in adverse circumstances – notably to Egypt, Chad, South Sudan, the Central African Republic, and Ethiopia.

In response to the emergency in Sudan and in light of the increasing numbers of arrivals into Egypt, UNHCR, the UNRC and other UN sister agencies, in collaboration with the Government of Egypt, are working together to support people fleeing Sudan and crossing into Egypt and are in need of international protection.

UNHCR is leading on coordinating an interagency response to address the needs of those crossing, guided by the inputs received from the government, the Sudanese community in Egypt as well as the Egyptian Red Crescent, who is leading the response at the Egyptian borders.
