Remember Zenaat*, the courageous woman who transformed her life through determination and resilience? Born into a large family in Afghanistan, Zenaat* always held a deep desire to help those around her. Her challenging journey – from pursuing education against the odds, to becoming a gynecologist – has been a testament to her unwavering spirit.
When conflict forced Zenaat* and her family to seek refuge in Tajikistan, she discovered a new passion for powerlifting – a sport that mirrored her inner strength. While struggling with the complexities of starting a new life, Zenaat* found solace and empowerment in the gym. It was in the gym that Zenaat* found people who were ready to support her journey to success – the encouraging words of her coach became a source of stability and strength. Her dedication to the sport quickly brought results, with Zenaat* winning several regional tournaments in Tajikistan.
Her achievements did not go unnoticed. Her emotional – and physical – transformation encouraged her daughter, her six sisters and her brother to take an interest in powerlifting as well. At first, they were curious observers, watching Zenaat’s* sessions and silently admiring at her growing strength and confidence.
Zenaat’s* daughter was the first to join her mother, wanting to one day be as strong as her. Slowly, the rest of the family started to join Zenaat* with growing enthusiasm. The family began to train together, finding in powerlifting a shared passion that brought them closer. They supported each other, celebrating personal bests and providing encouragement through challenging lifts. What started as Zenaat’s* individual pursuit led to each member finding their own strength and purpose.
Months of hard work led to Zenaat* and her family members qualifying for the Dushanbe Powerlifting Tournament – a competition that drew participants from across the region. With determination and support for each other, they joined the tournament in their respective categories. Their efforts paid off as almost all eight of Zenaat’s* family members finished top three in their categories. For them these victories were more than just athletic achievements; they symbolized the unity and resilience that had guided them through difficult times.
“Winning this tournament is not just about the medals; it’s about proving that together, we can achieve anything,” Zenaat* remarked proudly. “Each one of us faced our own challenges and fears, but we never gave up. Our journey shows that no matter where you come from or what obstacles you face, with determination and support of your family, you can overcome anything.”
Standing together on the winner’s podium, medals around their necks, Zenaat* and her family felt a deep sense of pride and gratitude towards Tajikistan and the local community for hosting them.
Today, Zenaat* and her family continue to inspire others with their story of perseverance and unity. Through their journey in powerlifting, they show that with determination and solidarity, even amidst adversity, dreams can be pursued and achieved.
Tajikistan, sharing approximately 1,344 km of border with Afghanistan – the longest of any Central Asian state – has been at the forefront of Afghanistan’s turbulence for the past 40 years. As of 31 May 2024, it hosts more than 10,000 refugees and asylum seekers, the largest number in Central Asia. Most reside in peri-urban areas near Dushanbe, including Vahdat, Rudaki, Hissor, and Jabbor Rasulov in Sughd province. The UNHCR National Office in Tajikistan continues to advocate for access to territory, strengthen the State’s capacity for quality, non-discriminatory asylum, and focus on socio-economic inclusion and durable solutions, supported by expanded partnerships.
With just four days until the Olympic Games Paris 2024, 36 athletes from 11 different countries are preparing to compete as members of the third ever International Olympic Committee Refugee Olympic Team. Like Zenaat’s* story, participation of these athletes in the Olympic Games Paris 2024 is a powerful symbol of hope and resilience, representing over 120 million forcibly displaced people worldwide. As the world watches, the Refugee Olympic Team will stand as a testament to the enduring strength and determination of refugees everywhere.
