Overview

We work together with governments, partners and communities to ensure that everybody has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another country, having fled violence, persecution, war or disaster at home.

Formally known as the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1950.

UNHCR now employs more than 19,000 people, who work in 137 countries and territories, using their expertise to protect and assist over 108.4 million people.
