Today UNHCR Representative for Central Asia Hans Friedrich Schodder met with Special Representative of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Afghanistan Ismatulla Irgashev to discuss expanding cooperation to provide humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan through Uzbekistan.
Mr. Schodder expressed his gratitude to the Government of Uzbekistan for assistance in establishing a UNHCR humanitarian hub at the Termez Cargo Center for the storage and transportation of humanitarian cargo to Afghanistan. This work is part of UNHCR’s efforts to provide life-saving assistance to the people of Afghanistan.
During the meeting the parties also discussed the possibility of expanding the use of the UNHCR humanitarian hub in Termez as a point for consolidating and forwarding humanitarian cargo to assist UNHCR operations not only in Afghanistan, but also in Iran and Central Asia.
In December 2021, UNHCR sent humanitarian cargo from its hub at the Termez Cargo Center to Afghanistan, and in February 2022 to Tajikistan to help prepare for a possible influx of refugees from Afghanistan. Located less than two kilometers from the Uzbekistan-Afghanistan border, the Termez Cargo Centre in southern Uzbekistan is a key part of UNHCR’s efforts to secure humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people.
