UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, welcomes the efforts Uzbekistan has been making to eradicate statelessness in recent years.
According to the data released by the Government of Uzbekistan to UNHCR in August 2020, it granted citizenship to 6,318 stateless persons in 2019 alone. This is the largest annual number of naturalizations in Central Asia so far.
This year, Uzbekistan adopted a new law on citizenship from which over 50,000 stateless people can benefit and have their citizenship recognized. The new provisions, which entered into force on 1 April 2020, will confer citizenship to registered stateless persons who have been granted permanent residence in Uzbekistan before 1 January 1995.
Over the past three years, Uzbekistan has conferred citizenship to more than 11,000 stateless people, amended its birth registration practices to ensure universal birth registration, including for children born to undocumented parents, and launched a national campaign to identify and register all cases of unregistered births.
Currently, Uzbekistan is home to 93,950 stateless persons. In the framework of the global #IBelong campaign to end statelessness by 2024, UNHCR will continue to support Uzbekistan in its efforts to prevent and eradicate statelessness.
