On 22-26 November Ms. Angela Li Rosi, Deputy Director of the Europe Bureau of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) paid an official working visit to Belarus to discuss solutions for asylum-seekers, refugees and migrants stranded at the Belarus-Poland border.
In Minsk, UNHCR Deputy Director for Europe met with high-level officials, including Mr. Sergey Aleinik, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lieutenant General Mr. Anatoly Lappo, Chairman of the State Border Committee of Belarus and Major General Mr. Yuri Nazarenko, Deputy Minister of Interior. She also visited Grodno where she met with Mr. Vladimir Karanik, Grodno region Governor.
During the meetings Angela Li Rosi expressed her appreciation for humanitarian aid provided to asylum-seekers, refugees and migrants and emphasized the importance of finding the most appropriate and humane solutions for people stranded at the border. She also reiterated that UNHCR stands ready to continue provide support in its areas of expertise.
UNHCR has been present in Belarus with an office in Minsk. On behalf of UNHCR, Angela Li Rosi also expressed her appreciation for the long-standing partnership with local partner organizations, including the Belarusian Red Cross and Belarusian Movement of Medical Workers. In the current situation, UNHCR has been able to distribute emergency humanitarian assistance to people stranded at the border through the Belarusian Red Cross.
