UNHCR explores innovative ways of attracting additional funds for assisting persons of concern from international country donors and private sector. The Office acts as a mediator in establishing relationships between its implementing partners and sponsors, including for in-kind contributions; donations of basic supplies; educational activities for children and adolescents and other types of humanitarian aid.
In 2020, 11 tons of clothes were delivered to Belarus as part of the global partnership between the Japanese brand UNIQLO. These items included winter apparel and other articles of clothing for all age groups. With active involvement of the Belarusian Red Cross Society, all clothes were delivered to local branches in three regions of the country and the city of Minsk and distributed among refugees, asylum-seekers, stateless people, as well some other vulnerable families in need.
Fast Retailing/UNIQLO began its partnership with UNHCR in 2006 with their first donation of clothing for refugee families. This contribution was made up of clothes donated by UNIQLO customers through their instore recycling programme. Ever since, the partnership has grown both in scope and scale, to have an incredible impact for refugees across the world. Since then, over 35 million pieces of clothing have been delivered to people forced to flee in more than 48 countries where UNHCR works. Additionally, Fast Retailing/UNIQLO has donated approximately US$13 million towards UNHCR’s programmes. You can read more about the collaboration here.
