On 12 July, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres established a High-level Panel on Digital Cooperation.
This new structure is tasked to advance proposals to strengthen cooperation in the digital space among Governments, the private sector, civil society, international organizations, technical and academic communities and other relevant stakeholders.
Jack Ma, executive chairman of Alibaba Group, and Melinda Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, have been appointed by the secretary-general as co-chairs of the panel.
The panel consists of 20 members, each representing a cross-section of expertise from government, private industry, civil society, academia and the technical community, is expected to identify policy, research and information gaps, and make proposals to strengthen international cooperation in the digital space.
To do so, it will conduct a global consultation process, drawing expertise from communities around the world and submit its final report within a nine month-period.
The High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation will contribute to stimulating discussion among and between various stakeholder groups on how they can work together to maximize the potential of the digital transformation, to ensure a safe and inclusive digital future for all.
