The exhibition, “Seeking Sanctuary…And A New Life,” shows the lives and experiences of 25 refugees and asylum seekers from Syria, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Mali and Ukraine that have sought refuge and sanctuary in Bulgaria.
The photos were captured by Nikolay Stoykov, a filmmaker and photojournalist who has been telling stories of refugees in Bulgaria for nearly a decade.
Stoykov’s mission is to capture people’s humanity – their emotions, individuality, dreams and reality, with the hope that it will enhance public understanding, empathy and inspire people to lend a helping hand.
The photos capture the personal moments of refugees while on their journey to Bulgaria in search of safety as well as the hope of a new life. Some of the photographs capture the tension along the border between Ukraine and Romania in the Spring of 2022 while others highlight the delight of refugee women taking part in sewing classes in refugee centres in 2018 as well as a sneak peek into Bulgarian schools that have accepted children from Afghanistan and Iraq and lastly the story of refugee children from the refugee centre in Harmanli.
