Kuwait gives US$ 100 million to UNHCR for Syria operations
Geneva, 7 April 2014 (UNHCR) - The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees welcomes the State of Kuwait's contribution of US$ 100 million to support UNHCR operations aiding Syrians.
"I am very grateful to the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the government and people of Kuwait for this major contribution. Kuwait has again proven to be a solid supporter of UNHCR and our work. These funds are urgently needed to provide life-saving support to those fleeing the conflict in Syria, as well as those displaced inside the country," said High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres.
This donation comes as Syria tops the world list for those forcibly displaced, with over 2.6 million Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries and more than 6.5 million displaced inside the country. As the situation continues to worsen, the numbers of people in need continues to grow.
UNHCR needs over US$ 1.6 billion to fully fund our operations in response to the Syria crisis. It is currently 22 per cent funded.
"I reiterate my appeal to governments and parliaments to urgently approve extraordinary funding to help the victims of the Syria crisis. We must collectively ensure that the most basic needs of the Syrian people are met and that the stability of the region is preserved," Mr. Guterres said.
UNHCR works closely with neighbouring countries, international organisations and other partners to provide vital assistance to refugees and IDPs affected by the violence in Syria.
