Future Lawyers enhance legal knowledge and proficiency owing to
Summer School on Public International Law (PIL) and
Training on International Human Rights Law (IHRL)
Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University – On 9 July 2016, closing ceremony of the Summer School on Public International Law (PIL) and the two-day training on International Human Rights Law (IHRL) took place at Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University in Yerevan.
The PIL Summer School and IHRL training course have materialised owing to the partnership of international organisations, academia and the civil society: OSCE Office in Yerevan, CoE Office in Yerevan, ICRC Delegation and UNHCR in Armenia, Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University (RAU) and Mission Armenia NGO. Being satisfied with the results of the program and taking into account the participants’ opinions organizers are currently considering the possibility of the summer school being a continuous initiative.
The key objective of the PIL Summer School and IHRL training course is to raise the awareness of and provide sufficient knowledge to future lawyers; enhance the efficiency of existing summer schools, moot-courts or similar initiatives in the specific spheres. 26 of 36 selected students successfully completed the Summer school and received certificates of participation. It should be noted that 5 of the students are Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University students, and the other participants were from different universities. Moreover, the program was a real opportunity for the students studying at universities in the regions.
The representatives of the organizations were present at the closing ceremony. Mr. Armen Darbinyan, the provost of the Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University and Mr. Christoph Bierwirth, the UNHCR Representative delivered final speech at the ceremony.
Mr. Darbinyan welcomed the initiative highlighting the fact that the project brought students from different universities together aiming to enhance their knowledge in the sphere. He also mentioned that the guarantee of a strong state is the presence of a strong society therefore, the role of the society needs to be increased in the development of the state, and the young participants of the summer school should contribute to this issue using their knowledge.
Mr. Bierwirth also expressed his satisfaction with regard to the implementation of the program emphasizing the importance of knowledge of international law for professionals of the country, as “the national legal system is nor isolated, but rather acts in the framework and based on the international law”. He also mentioned about the importance of the international human rights law.
The participants of the Summer school also expressed their opinion on the course.
“I am glad that this Summer school, compared to other scientific events, was open to all students, moreover, it gave a real opportunity to the students studying in the regions to participate in the courses. I am excited, that I have been selected for participating in the Summer school. I am very grateful to the organizers for putting together the PIL Summer school and the two-day IHRL training”, said Ms. Mariam Sargsyan, a senior at Gavar State University.
“The Summer school gave us the opportunity to gain knowledge on Public International law, as well as, to be informed about job opportunities in the sphere of international law that will help students to acquire practical skills based on their knowledge. In the framework of the Summer school we – the participants – made friends with students from different universities of Republic of Armenia”, said Ms. Sophia Zakharyan, a student from Department of Jurisprudence, Institute of Law and Policy of the Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) University.
It should also be noted that during the implementation of the Summer school per the recommendation of Ms. Anahit Hayrapetyan, UNHCR External relations and public information coordinator, an agreement was reached to organize a seminar on external relations and public information aiming to improve practical knowledge of the Russian-Armenian (Slavonic) university and other interested students.
