Today, August 19, on World Humanitarian Day, we celebrate Armenia’s unwavering commitment to providing refuge and support to those in need. Under the theme #ActForHumanity, this global observance shines a light on the remarkable efforts of humanitarian workers worldwide, and in Armenia.
Humanitarian work transcends borders, driven by a universal goal to alleviate suffering and restore dignity to displaced and stateless individuals. Across the globe, humanitarian workers navigate challenging and often dangerous conditions to deliver vital aid and support, embodying a profound commitment to those in crisis.
The humanitarian spirit, empathy and compassion- these universal values are deeply rooted in the heart of the Armenian people. The country has long been a refuge to people forced to flee their home, demonstrating an enduring commitment to providing safety and support. This compassion is reflected in the dedication of Armenia’s government, people, authorities, and civil society who play a crucial role in the humanitarian effort.
Spotlight on Aida: A Humanitarian Hero in Gyumri
In honour of World Humanitarian Day, we highlight the exceptional work of Aida, a dedicated social worker with Mission Armenia NGO, a key partner of UNHCR. Based in Gyumri, Aida’s work is pivotal in offering support to refugee families. Her role includes direct outreach, assessing needs, and collaborating with local authorities and UNHCR to ensure timely and effective assistance.
Since September 2023, thousands of refugees across Armenia’s ten provinces have received critical aid, including core relief items and warm clothing essential for the winter. Aida’s efforts include building meaningful relationships with refugee families, providing care, support, a listening ear, useful advice, and assistance.
Reflecting on her experience, Aida shares, “I am so thankful to the refugee families for their trust towards me. I value their sincerity and willingness to cooperate. I visit them now and then to check their situation, to play with the children, and interact with the older family members. The families are so resilient and optimistic, open for dialogue. They share their concerns but also suggest solutions, which I find very important.”
On this World Humanitarian Day, UNHCR Armenia extend our deepest gratitude to humanitarian workers like Aida in Armenia. Their dedication and compassion are vital in transforming the lives of those they serve. By embodying the spirit of #ActForHumanity, they bring hope and support to those in the most challenging circumstances.
Thank you to all the humanitarian heroes who work tirelessly to provide relief and assistance to displaced individuals in Armenia. Your commitment is a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of human kindness.
