Today, the Embassy of France in Armenia hosted a memorable reception to honour the extraordinary accomplishments of para-athletes from across Armenia.
This event, following the National Para Sports Festival, not only celebrated athletic prowess but also highlighted the importance of inclusivity and diversity in sports.
The evening commenced with warm greetings from His Excellency, Ambassador Olivier Decottignies, who emphasized the event’s significance in fostering unity through sports.
“On the eve of the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Embassy of France in Armenia is proud to collaborate on the 20th Para Sports Festival in Yerevan. We salute the athletes for their outstanding performance and loyalty to the Olympic spirit and commend the organizers for their efforts in promoting inclusion and fostering community cohesion through sports.”, remarked Ambassador Decottignies.
Mr. Hakob Abrahamyan, President of the Armenian National Paralympic Committee, took the stage to personally honour each para-athlete, recounting their inspiring journeys and triumphs. “These athletes embody resilience and strength, making them true champions,” Mr. Abrahamyan said. He also expressed gratitude to the organizers, including UNHCR, and acknowledged the collaboration of the Yerevan Municipality, Government of Armenia, and the Embassy of France in Armenia for their support.
Throughout the evening, speeches resonated with messages of inclusivity and support for para sports. Ms. Karine Sujayan, Head of Human Rights and Humanitarian Issues Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, underscored the country’s commitment to inclusivity and respect for diversity. “Events like these exemplify Armenia’s dedication to providing equal opportunities for all athletes,” Ms. Sujayan affirmed.
UNHCR Officer-in-Charge, Ms. Gwenolenn Le Couster, commended the advocates of para sports for their pivotal role in promoting social inclusion and breaking down barriers. “The power of sports to heal, include, and foster a sense of belonging is truly remarkable,” Ms. Le Couster emphasized. She extended heartfelt congratulations to the athletes and expressed gratitude to the Armenian National Paralympic Committee (ANPC), Government of Armenia, Embassy of France in Armenia, and the Yerevan Municipality for their collaborative efforts in supporting para sports and creating inclusive opportunities for all.
The reception also featured a special recognition of Ms. Greta Vardanyan, an esteemed para-athlete who has earned the honour of representing Armenia at the Paris Paralympics in August 2024. Ms. Vardanyan was introduced with great honour, acknowledging her dedication and achievements in adaptive sports.
The evening’s highlight was the award ceremony, where medals and certificates were presented to the National Para Sports Festivals’ winners. Each athlete shared touching reflections on their experiences during the event, emphasizing the transformative power of sports in their lives and communities.
Among the distinguished guests was 10-year-old Alvin Mayel Shalom, accompanied by his mother, Ms. Lamarana Djiba Bah, displaced from Guinea. Alvin’s heartfelt rendition of an Armenian folk song brought joy and touched the hearts of everyone present, earning him a loud round of applause for his talent and spirit.
The para-athletes expressed their joy at being recognized for their talents and contributions. “It is a privilege to be here tonight, among fellow athletes and supporters, celebrating our achievements,” shared one of the athletes during the award ceremony.
As the reception drew to a close, Ambassador Decottignies expressed gratitude to all partners and attendees for their unwavering support.
“Tonight’s event was not just about celebrating achievements; it was about honouring the human spirit and the power of sports to unite us,” he remarked warmly.
Guests continued to mingle, inspired by the stories and accomplishments of the para-athletes, reaffirming their commitment to promoting a more inclusive society.
