UNHCR Archives Research and Access Policy

© UNHCR / B. Bannon

Not all records are immediately available for research use. UNHCR Access rules balance the need of privacy for individuals, particularly refugees, and the operational needs of the organization, with the interest of researchers in this rich legacy of documents. All files must be reviewed by UNHCR Archives staff before external research to identify any information related to individual cases addressed by UNHCR because such personal information is not available under the access policy.

If you wish to use our archives, please refer to the search tools for either the Headquarters Fonds, the Field Fonds or the External Fonds. Fill in the Document Request Form - indicating the material you wish to see in order of priority - and the Research Application Form and send both to UNHCR Archives with proposed dates of research, giving at least two weeks' notice. Upon receipt, UNHCR Archives will review the request and then arrange an appointment.

UNHCR Archives is located in our headquarters at 94 Rue de Montbrillant, CH-1202 Geneva, Switzerland. Research facilities are open Monday to Friday from 9am to 1pm. Please consult the Research Room Regulations before your visit. For more information, write to us in Geneva or e-mail UNHCR Archives.
