Osvaldo Laport was appointed a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador in 2006 – the first in Latin America. The charismatic Uruguayan moved to Argentina to study acting in 1976, and from a stage career in Buenos Aires he moved on to international stardom after lead roles in soap operas on the small screen. Laport has used his following and influence to vigorously champion the cause of refugees and helped raise the agency's profile in the Spanish-speaking world. As a Goodwill Ambassador he has met refugees and internally displaced people in Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Peru and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Laport uses his talents to advocate for refugees, communicating messages of respect and solidarity with those fleeing persecution and conflict to a large audience in the Latin America region. Relentlessly helping UNHCR spread the word, he makes a difference.
