UNHCR chief welcomes latest talks in Geneva between Morocco and Polisario Front on confidence building measures
GENEVA, September 20 (UNHCR) - The UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres on Thursday hailed this week's meeting on confidence building measures for separated families from the Western Sahara Territory.
Senior officials from UNHCR attended the meeting in Geneva on Wednesday with representatives of Morocco and the Polisario Front as well as the two neighbouring countries, Algeria and Mauritania.
The parties discussed humanitarian actions for Sahrawi refugees in Algeria's Tindouf camps and their family's in the Western Sahara Territory and agreed to enhance the confidence building measures programme.
The High Commissioner reminded the participants that "there is no humanitarian solution to a political problem." He also urged them to continue to work together to ensure that as many people as possible benefit from the opportunity to see their family members, after being separated for almost four decades.
