UNHCR reaches out to help displaced people outside Dili

Official estimates show that there are 78,000 people displaced outside Dili after fleeing the capital, compared to 69,000 still in camps within the capital. -
Container ship sails into Dili harbour with 150 tonnes of emergency aid
12 Jun 2006 A container ship has arrived in the Timor-Leste capital Dili with 150 tonnes of aid, including tents, blankets and kitchen sets. UNHCR has now transported more than 200 tonnes of emergency relief to the troubled young nation in the past week, enough for more than 17,000 people. -

5 Jun 2006 UNHCR's emergency airlift of shelter supplies for some 30,000 displaced people in Timor-Leste is well under way, with the first flight landing in Dili early Monday. A second flight, a B-747 jumbo bound for Darwin, was set to leave Amman, Jordan later Monday. In total, 400 tonnes of supplies from the agency's regional Middle East stockpiles are expected to be sent to troubled Timor-Leste. -

2 Jun 2006 The first flight of UNHCR's emergency airlift to Timor-Leste is scheduled to depart Amman, Jordan tonight, loaded with urgently needed shelter supplies and other basic items for tens of thousands of displaced people. An emergency team is deploying to Dili over the weekend to reinforce staff already on the ground. -

The initial response will cost around US$3.7 million but more funds may be needed depending on how the situation evolves. -

14 Mar 2006 Timor-Leste's President Xanana Gusmão pays an official visit to the UN refugee agency and is warmly welcomed by High Commissioner António Guterres, who had been Portugal's Prime Minister during the turbulent period of East Timor's separation from Indonesia. East Timor had previously been a Portuguese colony. -
Solutions found for East Timor's separated children
14 Dec 2004 After a long search, solutions have been found for nearly 4,500 children separated from their families during the upheaval in East Timor in 1999. Most have either been reunited with their families or will continue to stay with their caregivers in Timor-Leste and Indonesia. The two countries have signed an agreement on how to help the remaining 107 children and on how future cases will be managed.
