UNHCR emergency airlift for Aceh set for takeoff
1 Jan 2005 A UN refugee agency emergency airlift operation was set to get off the ground Sunday from Denmark and Dubai, carrying 400 tonnes of urgent aid to Indonesia's disaster-razed province of Aceh. A 14-member emergency team of UNHCR specialists is also being deployed to Aceh as part of a joint UN response to the disaster. -

29 Dec 2004 UNHCR plans to airlift tents from its warehouse in Dubai to the devastated Indonesian province closest to the epicentre of the earthquake. The refugee agency has also contributed US$50,000 to the UN Emergency Relief Plan in Thailand, and continues relief efforts in Sri Lanka. -
Australia accepts Iraqi refugees from Nauru
17 Dec 2004 A group of 23 recently-recognised Iraqi refugees have left Nauru after more than three years, arriving in Australia to join their relatives. UNHCR has welcomed the move, and urged the government to grant complementary protection to other Iraqi asylum seekers on the island. -
Scholarship offers new hope to refugees in Australia
15 Dec 2004 The University of Adelaide programme offers one scholarship in each of its five faculties in areas of study as diverse as medicine, commerce, the humanities and engineering for refugees with Temporary Protection Visas who meet the academic standards. UNHCR speaks to an Iraqi recipient of the scholarship. -
Solutions found for East Timor's separated children
14 Dec 2004 After a long search, solutions have been found for nearly 4,500 children separated from their families during the upheaval in East Timor in 1999. Most have either been reunited with their families or will continue to stay with their caregivers in Timor-Leste and Indonesia. The two countries have signed an agreement on how to help the remaining 107 children and on how future cases will be managed. -
In PNG, refugees from Indonesia's Papua province start complex journey to new home
1 Oct 2004 The UN refugee agency is relocating a group of 185 refugees from Papua New Guinea's Vanimo to East Awin, where they can receive more land to grow crops and raise livestock, enjoy better services like education and health care, and apply for the right to free movement within their host country. -
UNHCR welcomes move to let temporary refugees stay in Australia
13 Jul 2004 The UN refugee agency has welcomed new measures by the Australian government that recognise the contribution of refugees and give 9,500 temporary protection visa holders a chance to apply to stay in the country permanently. -
Australia shows its heart and support for refugees
28 Jun 2004 To commemorate World Refugee Day, more than 20,000 beautifully crafted hearts were planted in "fields of hearts" in 20 locations across Australia. The multi-coloured hearts bore slogans and images which showed Australian support for refugees and asylum seekers locally and internationally.
