UNHCR urges Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan to keep border open
17 May 2005 The UN refugee agency has appealed to both governments to keep their border open for possible new arrivals following the recent violence in Uzbekistan. Meanwhile, emergency supplies have arrived for 541 asylum seekers in the Kyrgyz border town of Jalal-Abad. -
UNHCR helps Uzbekistan to improve treatment of refugees
24 May 2004 The refugee agency has completed a project to train Uzbekistan's border officers in refugee law and teach them how to handle potential asylum seekers. This is part of efforts with the European Union and Uzbek government to improve border management in four Central Asian countries. -
UNHCR opens office in Kazakh capital
31 Mar 2004 The new office in Astana will help the UN refugee agency build more partnerships with governmental and non-governmental organisations to care for some 16,000 refugees and asylum seekers in the Central Asian country.
